Geographical location

Mielec covers an area of 46.89 km2, it lies in the central part of the Sandomierz Basin on the Wisłoka River – the right tributary of the Vistula. It has a favourable climate characterized by warm summers and mild winters. It is one of the sunniest places in the country. The vegetation period lasts about 220 days. The large forest complex (south-western part of the Sandomierz Forest), which constitutes a natural shield for the city from the north and east, has a significant impact on the climate. The soils of Mielec’s terrains and surrounding areas show a wide variation. Fertile alluvial soils predominate in the valley of the Wisłoka, and in the north-east there are sands. On the eastern terrains of the city there are also muddy soils, including peats exploited for medicinal purposes.
