Market Square

Mielecki rynek

Like in the cities built from the 12th to the 13th century in western and central Europe, it was built as the centre of the first development of the city, founded by Jan and Bernardyn Mielecki on the 18th of November 1470, on a rectangular plan with dimensions of 100 m x 87 m. Since the beginning, the market fulfilled the traditional role of the centre of economic and social life. A wooden town hall stood there – the seat of the municipal government. This area was most commonly the place of trade, particularly animated during fairs and markets. Many adjacent buildings housed inns and craft workshops. The wooden buildings of the market were destroyed several times as a result of serious city fires. In 1900, a great fire in the central part of Mielec destroyed the vast majority of the wooden houses. In 1901, it was decided that buildings in the market and downtown can be built with brick, and additionally, in the market, higher than one storey. Renovated in 2011, the market square is the favourite place of leisure for the inhabitants of Mielec and its. During the bustling day, in the surroundings of historic buildings, alleys and greenery, you can relax enjoying the water spectacle of the fountain, enriched by a blaze of colours in the evening. The pride of the city centre is a tenement building with a dome, built in 1904 for Jan Łojczyk’s family.
